Autism Awareness In Our Playgrounds

CATEGORY / Inclusive Play, Uncategorized

Autism awareness month aims to bring awareness to the challenges that people with Autism face every day as well as promoting acceptance and drawing attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year.  It is a chance for everyone to see how we can help promote inclusion for all and make sure each person diagnosed with Autism has the opportunity to have the highest possible quality of life.

This month Miracle Playsystems would like to highlight ways to design for the needs of children with Autism and their families so they can have a truly inclusive place to play and feel accepted.  Many playgrounds have challenges that make autistic children feel left out, afraid, overwhelmed and worried.  We here at Miracle Playsystems would like to challenge everyone who has a hand in developing play-spaces to make sure “All Inclusive” is a standard, not an after thought.  Playground designers have the chance to help these families have a place to feel welcome, safe and included.  We would like to highlight resources for designers that highlight ways to design for the needs of these children.

Playgrounds to Inspire the Next American Ninja Warrior

One of the best measures of the success of a play environment is how long people stay engaged with the space. The greatest factors influencing this are the level of challenge and variety of experiences. Over time children figure out how to use play equipment and the level of challenge decreases and it becomes harder to stay engaged for longer periods of time. When we introduce competition into play the variety of experiences is always changing and stays engaging. Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) is a sport in which a competitor, traveling on foot, must overcome various physical challenges. OCR is a great way to stay fit, have fun, meet new friends and thanks to shows and competitions like American Ninja Warrior, Spartan Race, Warrior Dash and ToughMudder: Obstacle Course Racing can also make you famous. Miracle Playsystems has several product offerings to help make your next playground design unique, challenging, and just maybe help a child become the Next American Ninja Warrior.Warrior Course 1-BUsing standard traditional playground elements like monkey bars, climbing walls, and crawl tubes we can help transform your park or school into an age appropriate obstacle course for all abilities.

The most common question we are asked as playground professionals is “What’s new in playgrounds?”. The current trend we are seeing in playscape design in Northern California and across the country is all about outside the box thinking. Whether it is developing custom designs or taking play outside of the play box and onto the streets. There is a trend happening to integrate play anywhere. We are finding playscapes popping up on streetscapes, in museums, in office buildings, and in shopping centers. The new look of playgrounds is changing and the designs are being created in ways that work towards building happier, healthier and more connected communities.
